College of Humanities & Social Sciences

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the two largest colleges on campus. It includes the Departments of Behavioral Science, Communication, English and Literature, History and Political Sciences, Integrated Studies, Interdisciplinary Studies, Languages and Cultures, and Philosophy and Humanities. We offer a wide range of General Education Courses along with courses for majors in the college.

Autism Initiative

Our autism efforts are widespread. We currently offer a certificate and minor in Autism Studies. We also offer a transition program for young adults on the Autism Spectrum who wish to pursue higher education but need some support to prepare them. Our new Autism Center is currently under construction.

Peace & Justice Studies

Peace and Justice Studies at UVU is an unparalleled academic program that prepares students to enter graduate programs and careers building peace in countless ways in the US and across the globe. Our academic program is bolstered by first-rate study abroad programs in Northern Ireland, Haiti, the Middle East, Russia, and Cuba.  Our students also have the opportunity to do internships and field work around the world, for example, in Guatemala, Chile, Haiti, Thailand, Uganda, Geneva, London, the Middle East, and of  course, the US.  Moreover, we bring many internationally recognized experts to campus to speak and teach.

Strengthening Families

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a nationally and internationally recognized parenting and family strengthening program for families and is especially effective with high-risk families. SFP is an evidence-based family skills training program found to significantly reduce problem behaviors, delinquency, and alcohol and drug abuse in children and to improve social competencies and school performance. Child maltreatment also decreases as parents strengthen bonds with their children and learn more effective parenting skills. The program is facilitated by UVU faculty, interns and volunteers. Participating families are recommended to the program by schools in the Alpine School district and classes are held in their school buildings.

Student Support

We have the largest number of majors at UVU (over 4,000) yet only have 12 scholarships to offer each year. We also offer the most study abroad programs each year and have no funding to support students who wish to pursue that important option. There are often internship opportunities that are not affordable for our students. Finally, student research (and travel) is becoming an increasingly important component of an undergraduate educational experience (for those students interested in graduate school it is essential).

Chinese Initiative

This is a multifaceted program to position UVU to engage with China in several contexts. There are academic programs in Chinese Language, Chinese Culture, and Chinese Commerce. We bring in native Chinese speakers to serve as instructors and teaching assistants. Students participate in a Study Abroad Program to China each summer. We host a Chinese Summer Days on campus each summer which brings hundreds of public school students and teachers to campus. We are also developing a Chinese Education program to support Utah’s dual immersion initiative.
